It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut when using the computer.
We use the same methods to use our computers day in, and day out, even sitting in the same position and using the same exact commands to do our work.
While this is comfortable and familiar, it may not always be the smartest way to go, for 2 reasons: 1) This puts you at risk for repetitive motion injuries such as carpel tunnel syndrome and other nasties; 2) it may not be the fastest way to work.
So, in the interest of your physiology, and your efficiency, we are going to explore 12 terrific time-saving tips and tricks in Microsoft Excel. (Note: these tricks will work in any version of Excel.)
To make it easy on you, I’ve organized the tricks into categories…
Navigation Tricks
This might seem like the easiest part of Excel: getting around. Most of you are probably still stuck in the stone-age using the mouse to move from area to area of the program, or the spreadsheet. So let’s unlock your inner keyboardist, and let him/her out to play a little more often!
Here is a handy listing of methods of navigating, using the keyboard:
Mouse
Arrow keys
Control + Arrow Keys
Control + Home Key
Control + Page Dn/Up
Control + Tab
(move to the next open workbook)
Selection Tricks
Now for the coup d’ grace…most of the tricks we just mentioned for navigating above also serve double-duty for selecting cells and ranges too! All you have to do is throw in the Shift key with them, and voila!
Our Selection Tricks become:
Mouse
+ Shift
Arrow keys
+ Shift
Control + Arrow Keys
+ Shift
Control + Home Key
+ Shift
As an added bonus, we also have the following:
Control + Spacebar
or
Shift + Spacebar
(select Column/Row!)
Control + A
(selects everything!)
I hope you found these useful, and start using them right away in your spreadsheets!
Finally, I am going to leave you with some more resources for further browsing pleasure…
