Help! Somebody Hacked My Facebook Chat!
on June 18, 2012
I'm frustrated to report that last night, starting around 12:30am, someone hacked into my Facebook account and started sending nasty IMs (chat messages) to a bunch of my friends!
I was on Facebook, minding my own business, when I heard the familiar "bling!" sound that occurs when a chat message is received. I looked up and to my surprise, and horror, saw that MY chat window had launched a chat session with a friend. And it was writing sexual and nasty messages, as if "from me"!
Then a couple MORE chat windows opened up, to MORE of my friends, all with variations on this nasty stuff, horrible messages from me!
I quickly looked into the help system about having your account hacked, and followed every suggestion.
* Changing my passwords - yes, plural. I changed my Facebook password, plus both my email address passwords (necessitating I change them in 6 places - 2 on the web, 2 on my home computer, and 2 on my iPhone!)
* I then added login approval to my account, which only allows someone to login from an approved location, and texts you a login code to access FB for the first time for any given device.
* I also added logging in using a secure browser (https://), and one other suggestion on the site.
After this flurry of activity, I then logged out and logged back in, hoping all was well. Silence. Yay!
And then, again, "bling!" and chat windows started opening up "from me" to my more of my friends, who were saying things like, "um, is that YOU Mike?"
Of course I Googled this, but found NOTHING!!! The only other thing I could come up with, was maybe it was an app gone rogue. So I deleted ALL my apps, except for the apps for this website and a friend's website.
Still no-go; the nasty chats continued!
Then I tried deactivating my account. After much ado, I was able to deactivate the account, but not before losing the ability to develop for this website in Facebook - arg! I shall have to recreate this complicated bit. Plus I ended up creating a whole new account - even more lost time and frustration!
However...I'm happy to report that, once I finally deactivated, then reactivated, my account, no more nasty chats have popped up.
I'm still not entirely sure it's "over" since I don't understand how deactivating/reactivating my account could get rid of the hacker, but, for now at least it seems that all is well. It took about 2.5 hours to get through this.
Getting help from Facebook when I needed it was extremely frustrating...could not get a "real" person of course, and the lack of info on Google made it downright scary.
